m TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—lt has been evident for some time that the Pelorus Road Board has had all it could do to struggle along with a very limited income, and it appear* to me that some effort should be made to finance the Board out of its difficulties. In an article you wrote some time ago, you pointed out that the main road was of greater benefit to the travelling public outside the district than to settlers within the Board's boundaries. Now, Sir, I would suggest that a toll-gate be erected at the Kaituna end of the district, which would bring in a con* siderable sum annually. I am fully aware that the public feeling is very strong against this old fashioned money-raising institution, but the fact remains that if the Board is to carry out necessary works, money must be had by hook or by crook. There is another alternative I would suggestnamely, to make the rate one penny in the'jg instead of three-farthings. This plan may be just as objectionable as the toll-gate, but it is clear that the income of the Board is not sufficient, and it is of very little use seeking aid from the Government. The people in the district will have to put their own shoulders to the wheel or put up with bad and indifferent roads. I do not know whether my suggestions will be acted upon, but if attention is drawn to the matter possibly someone with sufficient business capacity may propound a scheme for overcoming the difficulty.
