A Beautiful Country.

Interviewed at Christchurch, Mr Stanley, the explorer, spoke as follows on the beauties ot New Zealand : " It's a beautiful country. I have seen many places in it where I should like to live. I like the country, and 1 like the people. The children, especially, are charming. There is as much difference between New Zealand and Australian bovs as there is between English and American boys. I hope jon will always have such newspapers, too, as you have now. I have seen nothing in a New Zealand newspaper that was not gentlemanly. A man might give any of them to his wife or sister to read. It h easy to see what will come to pass in New Zeeland. The country will become better known in England as tourists return from it. People at home will realise that these are some of the most beautiful islands in the.world, and the colony will be thoroughly permeated, if I may eay so, with visitors, especially when you get steamers which will do the voyage from England in 25 days. 1 think, too, that much good must come to the people here from constantly meeting with people from Eugland ; in fact, the benefit will be mutual. If the Englishmen from L>ndon rubs shoulders with the Englishmen from New Zealand the ideas of both will be expanded; each will assist to raise the other. If, however, the people here were to remain isolated they would soon fall behind. ■ I do not think, however, the people of New Zealand will remain isolated or fall far behind their friends in England "
