SPORTING.
FOOTBALL. The football match Gisborne v. Union, was played on Saturday afternoon in Tucker’s paddock. There were a good number of spectators on the ground. After a well contested game the Union won by one goal, to one disputed try. (OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellfngton, Monday. A Wellington Football team leaves for Auckland on the sth of August, and will play at Napier on its return. CRICKET. (own correspondent.) London, July 10. The cricket match, Australian v, Notts, resulted in a drawn game. WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE MEETING. (own correspondent.) Wellington, Monday. The above Steeplechase Meeting took placee on Saturday last. The weather was splendid and the attendance large. The following are the principal evants: — Trial Sweepstakes. Haiicore .. 1 Mountaineer 2 Spartan .. .. .. .. 8 HANDICAP HURDLES. Orient .. .. .. .. 1 Freebooter .. .. .. ~ 2 Forest King... .. .. .. 3 HANDICAP STEEPLECHASE. Denbigh 1 Secretary 2 Victor .. .. 3 —Three others also ran. This was the event of the meeting, and created some little interest. Victor was greatly fancied on account of bis light weight. It was a very good race, Denbigh, who was ridden with great judgment, just beating Secretary by a neck, Victor being close up for third place.
