(own correspondent.) Auckland, Friday. The house of Mr Wm. Walsh, Weiroa south, was destroyed by fire, with its contents, at 2 a.m. yesterday. One of the children narrowly escaped being burnt to death.

An agitation is being carried on in the northern districts, against the reduction of the vote for the Trunk Railway Extension in the North of Auckland. It is suggested that the settlers should refuse to pay the Property Tax as a vigorous protest against the injustice.

Tiie annual meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. was held on Wednesday. Dr Campbell (chairman) stated that business was in a flourishing condition. The losses by Holt’s defalcatians are not expected to exceed £l 5OO to /"jooo. Dr Campbell, the retiring Director, was re-elected, and Mr W. Innis Taylor was elected Colonial Auditor.

A three-year-old son of Mr Henry Taylor, of Stoneyhurst, Mount Eden, was burned to death yesterday. The poor little fellow’s clothing caught fire during the temporary absence of his mother. The child died after several hours’ agony. At a meeting of the City Council it was stated that a cow suffering from cancer had lately been slaughtered at the city abbatoirs, and sent to Ashwin, and sold as food. The matter was referred to a Committee, and the Inspector will be called upon to give evidence. Dunedin, Friday. A deputation of the unemployed waited on the Mayor of Dunedin yesterday, when that gentleman expressed himself in very strong terms in reference to their conduct. He said he was disgusted with the behaviour of some of the men who had not been very respectful to him because he had been compelled to discharge some of them. He had also noticed a few of them drinking after last pay day instead of taking the money home. They should remember that they were leceiving public money, and should be reasonable in their demands. He then agreed to telegraph that 300 men were out of work, and that with their families were on the verge of starvation.

A young woman named Mary Brougham, housekeeper at the Greytown Hotel, committed suicide by hanging herself last night. Nearly 200 essays on “Thrift” have been received by the Mutual Association fora prize of 25 guineas. Major Atkinson is to judge them.

The District Railways Purchase Committee accuse W. G. (“ Major”) Steward of having used his position as member of the House to dispose of debentures of the Duntroon-Hakataramea Railway Company, and alse reflects on Sir Julius Vogel. It also accuses Mr Peacock of somewhat similar conduct in connection with the Rotorua Railway.
