CORRESPONDENCE

To the Editor of the P.B. Independent. Sir, —There are no words strong enough to express the general danger and degradation of the manner of mob courtship, as distinct from these, which have become the fashion—almost the law in modern times, when in a miserable confusion of candlelight, moonlight, and limelight—and anything but daylight—m indecently attractive and insanely expensive dresses. In snatched moments, in hidden corners, in accidental impulses and dismal ignorances, young people smirk and ogle and whisper and whimper and sneak and stumble and flutter and fumble and blunder into what they call love, expect to get whatever they like the moment they fancy, and are continually in the danger of losing all the honor of life for a folly, and all the joy of it by an accident.—l am, &c., R. Harper. [What is the matter with our correspondent.—Ed.]

To the Editor of the P.B. Independand. Sir, —There are rumors afloat of another “ bust up”—this time at the South Pacific oil springs. There was no perceptible shaking of the earth, and the only place that seems to have felt the shock was up the court beside Mr Carlaw Smith’s (the agent’s) establishment. Poor Sarah trembled with joy, and ran to C.S. and Co. to ask whether they were really in earnest when they promised her 100 shares to act as a “ bogus director.” I understand it was declared “ all off!” It i? said the pipe has had to be plugged and it takes a good big boy to hold it down with both hands so as to prevent the sur- , rounding country being inundated,—Yours I &c. f Blarney,
