In a previous issue, when referring to the Mayoralty of this Borough, we inadvertantly fell into one slight error. The first Mayor, upon the constitution of the town into a Borough, was Mr W. F. Crawford, who contested the seat with a Mr Wilson, the latter scoring but three votes. Mr Crawford retained his seat for upwards of twelve months on account of the ensuing election not taking place for several months after the expiration of the twelve months of office. Mr Crawford then resigned in favor of Captain Porter, who took his seat unopposed, but having decided to stand again for a second term of office he had to enter the lists with his predecessor, and after an exciting contest snatched a bare victory by three votes. Captain Porter then retained the civic throne for two year longer, making three consecutive years, and then resigned in favor of Mr C. D. Bennett, who was succeeded by Mr E. K. Brown. Upon the expiration of the latter gentleman’s term of twelve months Captain Porter, for the fourth time took his seat at the head of the Council, and on relinquishing the honor was succeeded by our present Mayor. Up to the present there has been no indication of any opposition to the popu’ar nomination of Mr Allan McDonald, who will, in all probability, take his seat unapposed, thus making the seventh Mayor of Gisborne, during the nine years of the boroughs creation.
