Opening of the Exhibition
(own correspondent. ) Wellington, Monday. The opening of the Exhibition on Saturday was a great success, although the arrangements for admission were so faulty that the Governor and suite had to elbow their way through a dense crowd to reach the dais in the Music Hall, and Lady Jervois got separated from his Excellency in the struggle. A number of musicians and singers were besides unable to teach the platform.
The Governor arrived at 2.30, wearing the uniform of a Major-General, and insignia of Knighthood, and the Cross of St. Machael and St. George, accompanied by Lady Jervois and Miss Jervois, and attended by Major Eccles, aide-de-camp, and Mr Pennefather, private secretary. After the National Anthem and several choruses had been sung, Sir Julius Vogel delivered an address, and the Governor followed with a speech, in which he referred in eulogistic terms to what had been accomplished by this colony in the period since the London International Exhibition of 1851. He then declared the Exhibition open, and called for three cheers for it, which were heartily given. The assemblage then dispersed through the building, inspecting the exhibits. Throughout Saturday evening the Exhibition was crowded, about 7,000 persons having visited it.
