PRE-COOLING OF PEARS

H.B. EXPERIMENT TEST WITH. 400 CASES An experiment with the precooling of pears is being conducted in the Hastings district, and the pears will be shipped to England from Wellington at the end of the month. Supervised by Mr. A. Powell, senior cool storage officer connected with the Department of Agriculture, the experiment has involved the treatment of Winter Cole pears, the variety selected for the trials, in three ’different ways following harvesting. In one instance the fruit was picked and placed direct •mto cool-storage without being graded or packed; in the second case the fruit was picked and graded but not wrapped or packed, and in the third trial -the fruit was picked, graded and packed before being placed in cool storage.

The Hawke’s Bay experiment involves 400 cases. Two hundred cases were graded and packed prior to storage, while 100 cases in each case were treated in the other two systems indicated.

The condition of the fruit on arrival in London will be carefully watched, and it is hoped that some definite indication will be forthcoming as to the best method to .be followed in the future.
