RECEIPTS DOWN £l7£3 CARGO FIGURES HIGHER Figures submitted to to-day’s meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board showed increases in both, imports and exports during February, and also for the live months from the start of the board’s financial year. During February 6332 tons of cargo passed inward over the wharves, compared with 4458 tons during February last year, and 3227 tons went outward, compared with 2164 tons for the same month last year. The return covering five months ended February 28, 1939, showed 29,600 tons inward, against 27,735 tons' for the same five months of the previous year, and 17,425 tons outward, against 15,411 tons last year, an increase of 1865 tons of imports, and an increase of 2014 tons of exports. The cash statement for the five months’ period compared with the previous year’s figures under main headings showed: — Receipts (excluding rates on land). —Ship charges, 1938-39 £2297; 1937-38 £3115; wharfage, £8330, £8169; harbour improvement rate, £2945, £2462; rent, £2165, £3687; launch hire, £202, £277; sale of plant, etc., £l2, £l2; miscellaneous, £684, £666: totals, £16,635 and £18,388, a decrease of £1753 in receipts. Receipts in rates on land during the five months ended February 28 amounted to £6658, against £7042 for 'the same period in the previous year. Revenue receipts from all sources for the period this year amounted to £23,293.

Expenditure.—lnterest, sinking fund and bank charges, 1938-39 £30,767, 1937-38 £29,708; new plant, buildings, etc., £25. £163; grab dredging, £1340, £1646; general expenditure, £4911, £5342; totals, £37,043 and £36,859, an increase of £lB4 in expenditure. It should be noted that last year payment of £IOOO sinking fund instalment was delayed until May, therefore there is actually a small decrease in expenditure.
