BAROMETER FALLING

TASMAN DISTURBANCE DROUGHT MAY BREAK. (Per Press Association ) WELLINGTON, this day. Tlie barometer is falling. That, in itself, is no rare meteorological phenomenon, but it is interesting as it apparently marks the termination of a long period of high barometric pressure that has persisted throughout March and there are no parallel previous meteorological records. Whether the country will get muchneeded relief from the present disturbances is in the lap of the gods. Meteorologists are expecting it, but so far it has not materialised. The average 9 a.m. barometric pressure ol 1023.4 millibars is the highest Marcli average recorded in Wellington since tlie records were first taken in 1864. and is attained not by virtue of the high readings but by the absence of low ones. 1 The reading to-day was 1008.1 millibars and pressure is still on the downgrade. Conditions over the Tasman are much disturbed and there is apparently some big disturbance away to the south-east.
