THEFT OF GOLD

ORE WORTH £6OO THIEVES DESCEND. SHAFT KALGOORLIE, March 13, Thieves descended the shaft of the Blue Bird goldmine, near the township of Norseman, 140 miles from Kalgoorlie, last night, and stole two bags of rich ore worth £6OO. Situated in thick scrub, the Blue Bird mine employs only a few men, who left work yesterday afternoon, leaving the gold bagged in the shaft ready for transporting to the State battery for crushing'. When they returned the bags were missing. The thieves presumably took the gold away by motor car. The Blue Bird mine is the most spectacular producer of gold in Western Australia at the present time. One hundred thousand fully paid 2s shares have been issued, and the company has made declarations totalling 13s since the first payment in 1937. Some of the ore from the mine has been almost solid gold. Late last year 5300 z of gold were won from 1501 b of ore. From 952 tons treated, the company earned a profit of £45,647 in the year ended'June 30, 1938. The year’s yield was 71640 z, of an average grade of 7£oz to the ton. Early in 1937 the shares could be obtained for less than Is, but they have since touched 60s, and are now about 50s.
