FACIAL ECZEMA REPORTED
ISOLATED CASES ONLY PHOTO-SENSITISATION Odd cases of the disease commonly known as facial eczema have beai reported in the Gisborne district during the past few days, but no cause for general alarm in indicated in this announcement, for they are believed to be some of the isolated cases known to occur in most districts at this time of the season. The cases so far reported in the district are more in the nature, of photosensitisation than the true facial eczema. The distinction between photosensitisation and facial eczema is that in the former the skin is affected by light, probably through eating certain weeds and very young grass, but the liver is not damaged and the sheep not jaundiced, as in the case of true facial eczema. In the real facial eczema the liver is badly damaged and a severe jaundiced affliction is noticed ooimled with behaviour associated with photo-sensitisation. ;
A careful watch is being undertaken by the Department of Agriculture, and two special officers who came to the district some weeks ago are still in the neighbourhood, taking careful note of pasture and weather conditions.
