MEAT EXPORT CARGOES
MONTH’S FOURTEEN SHIPS RELIEF OF CONGESTION (Per Press Association.l AUCKLAND, this day. Hopes of relief in the congestion in meat storage space at the provincial freezing works are held by the scheduled arrival of 14 overseas ships to load produce at Auckland for Britain in the first three weeks of next month. The shipping loading allotments for April and May, announced at the week-end, will result in 11 ships visiting Auckland during the period, the balance arriving before April 20 being in the March-April allotments. With the departure last night of the Opawa no loading ships are at present in port, the next being the liner Rangitata due from Napier on Wedesday. “Although the freezing works will benefit from this clearance,” commented. a shipping representative, “it is still possible that the rate of killings wilt fully tax the space.” The Auckland shipping companies consider that the shortage of space to, carry the very -heavy quantity of refrigerated cargoes was due to unforeseen .'causes, neither the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board nor the companies being at fault. lit was explained that under the contract between the Meat Producers Board and the shipping conference Lines, t.he estimated produce figures were given about two months in advance to the companies which could then, arrange for the necessary shipping tonnage.
