WAIKAREMOANA CATTLE
STORTFOED LODGE SALE The store cattle yarding at Stortford Lodge, Hastings, last week consisted mainly of a large draft railed through from the Waikaremoana district. These cattle, which were chiefly empty 18 months and 30 months steers, were showing breeding and were well-grown. They came forward really good store condition, and were a first-class line to start off the season. Off high and hard country, they should develop unusually well in Hawke’s Bay. On an average they sold £2 a head cheaper than last season.
With only 2in. of rain since New Year the feed has withered away in most areas, with the result that cattle feed is at a premium. The vendors of the Waikaremoana cattle were unfortunate in meeting such conditions, but similar circumstances in their own district left them with no alternative.
Prices for Waikaremoana cattle were: — Two-year Aberdeen-Angus heifers, £4 15s; 18-month A.A. heifers, £2* 12s to £3 10s; grown steers, £5 Gs to £G 14s; 18-month steers, £3 10s; Hereford cows, £3 10s.
