ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
NURSING DIVISION PAIN ON ISLAND ILLNESS Last week the Gisborne Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade met for tile iirst time this year, when a very interesting talk on tropical illnesses was given by Mrs. J. D. Anderson, whose husband is pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Gisborne. Mrs. Anderson is a nurse, and previously, with her husband, was connected with medical missionary work in" the Solomon Islands for 18 years. The speaker had brought lantern slides, which were shown by means of a screen, to illustrate her talk. She prefaced her address on tropical illnesses met with in these islands by a wonderful word picture, as well as by means of slides, of the natural beauty of the islands and also a description of some ol' the pests in the Solomons. Her subjects included the luxurious vegetation, the exquisite orchids, the brightly-coloured birds, man-eating crocodiles, and poisonous insects. At the conclusion of the address, the lady ambulance officer, Mrs. C. Bcrridge, who is leaving on a visit to England on April (3, was presented with a letter signed by all members of the Nursing Division, wishing her an enjoyable trip and thanking her for her interest and help in the division. The letter expressed the deep appreciation of her services as felt by all members. The previous week a meeting of the executive of the Nursing Division drew up a syllabus for 1939, which included many interesting lectures as well as practical work.
