Womens Institutes

HINETAPQRA The liinetapora Institute celebrated its third birthday on Friday. March 3, at a luncheon in Tawheorangi Hall, Mangahanea. Visitors and members from the sister institutes. Ruatoria and Waiapu were welcomed by the president, Mrs. Tuheke. The pink-iced birthday cake presented by Mesdames Tuheke. Milner and Whaipooti, held pride of place in the centre of the long table. During luncheon the three candles were lit by Mrs. Tuheke, and the oldest member, Mrs. Wi Tawaho, blew them out. The honour of cutting the cake was bestowed upon Mrs. R. 11. Wicksteed. Mrs. E. K. Babbington, Waiapu, and Mrs. R. H. Wicksteed, Ruatoria, both congratulated Hinetapora on the wonderful display of articles made by members. Those present were: Mesdames Wicksteed, Boagey, P. Burton, Fry, C. Hunter, K. Babbington, T. It. Reedy. Bagge, Birch, Kunioka, C Woodford, Garth, M. Tawhiri, D. Grace, E. Beach, M. Poi, Wi Tawaho, Tuheke, Whaipooti, Milner, Te Puni, Tamihere. I. Grace, B. Maxwell, R. Tuhou, K. Hira, and H. C. Beach, and Misses T. and R. Hauraki, P. and R- Mahuika, C. Babbington, and E. Grace. A very successful dance was held on Saturday in aid of liinetapora Institute. The Night Owls’ orchestra supplied the music. The duties of M. were carried out by Mr. R. Awatere. The lucky spot waltz, was won by Mrs. M. Hogan and Mr. K. Milner. Supper was served by the committee, Mesdames Wi Tawaho, Tuheke, Whaipooti, Milner, I. Grace, and R. Tuhou. WHARERATA The Wharerata institute held its annal meeting on March 8. Mrs. H. P. Bushnell presided. The secretary, Mrs. A. N. West, read the report and balance-sheet. A report on the year’s work was given by the president, Mrs. B. Jones. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs. O. Swarhrick; vice-president, Mrs. A. N. West; secretary, Miss A. West, who, with Mrs. F. Hickling and Mrs. G. McAr.a, form the committee; gardening circle convener, Mrs. W. MjMeGuinness; librarian. Mrs. D. Clark; sales table secretary, Mrs. B. Jones. Reports from the librarian and the gardening circle convener were received, after which the secretary presented the programme for the new year. A reading, “The Worth of Beauty. ’ and a recipe, “one-egg chocolate cake,’’ was given by Mrs. F. Hickling. The hostesses for the day were Mrs. W. McGm'nness and Mrs. F. Hickling. During the morning the gardening circle was presided over by Mrs. G. McAra, who read several articles on garden lore and what manures contain. The competition, three zinnias, resulted as follows: —Mrs. H, McAra, 1; Mrs. D. Broad, 2; Mrs. H. Bushnell, 3. The points prizes for the year's competitions resulted: —Mrs. A. N. West, 1; Mrs. H. B. McAra, 2; Mrs. IT. Bushnell, 3. At the conclusion of the meeting a distribution of exhibition anemone bulbs was made among members.

RAKAUROA The annual meeting of the Rakauroa Institute was held during the month. There was a good attendance and the president welcomed two visitors. Mrs. Andrew Pieken was elected president for the coming year. Mrs. W. E. Shaw was the winner of the points prize for the year. The monthly competition was also won by Mrs. W. E. Shaw. A very interesting discussion on various books took place during the afternoon. WHAKAKI The monthly meeting of the Whakaki Institute was held on March 15. The competition, “Something new from something old,” resulted: Mrs. Willy Smith, 1 and 2; Mrs. P. Smith, 3. Aii interesting demonstration of tanakoa work was given by the secretary, 'Mrs. S. Smith. Five new members were elected, Mesdames Harvey, S. Kahukura. R. Pomona, Ilamana, and P. Walker. Mrs. A. Harrison and Mrs. G. D. Taylor were hostesses. Mr. Osier, sen., gave a fine exhibition of his films as a means of augmenting the funds of the institute. His generosity was much appreciated. RONGOMAITAPUI The annual meeting of the Rongormvitapui institute was held on. March 17 in the Rongomaltapui Hall. There was a very good attendance. There were no nominations for president or secretary-treasurer, and Mrs. N. C. Hughes will remain in office with Mrs. D. Waitoa. The following committee was elected; Mesdames Pohe, Wanoa, Brooking, Ngatai, Bristowe, Rangihuna, Apanui, with Mrs. D. Haerewa as vice-president. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: — Marble Cake.—Mrs. W. Ngatai. 1; Mrs. R. Bristowe, 2. Prettiest thrift article. —Mrs. R. Bristowe, 1; Mrs W. Ngatai, 2. Vase of any flowers.--Mrs. C. Hugh.es, 1. Afternoon tea was served. TAKITIMU The Takitimu institute met on Wednesday, March 15, Mrs. Rangiuia presiding. Apologies were received 1 from Mesdames Smith, Ferris, McLeod and Mackay. The election of officers- for the ensuing year resulted l -as follows: President, Mrs. Rangiuia; vice-presidents, Mesdames; Lyndon, Sherratt and Te Hau: committee, Mesdames Rangiuia, Slier* raitt, Lyndon, Blair, Keiha, Pitt, 'ft Hau, Smith and 'McLeod; press correspondent, Mrs. Lyndon; trades table, Mrs. Keilia; competition table, Mrs. Nasmiitih; welfare officers, Misses Taylor and Hopley; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Pitt. ■Mrs. McCliskie gave an informative talk about the work needed for the centennial court. The institute decided to associate with the Pan-Pacific conference. Mrs. Sherratt was elected to the federation committee. Mrs. Rangiuia was appointed delegate to the council meeting to be held: on April 21. ■Miss -ITopley demonstrated d-rawn-thireadi work, and showed an exquisite finished l piece. The competition, a receptacle for kitchen paper, resulted as follows: — Mrs. Sherratt, 1; Mrs. Pitt, 2; Mrs. Keiha, 3.

WIGAN The annual meeting of the Wigan institute was held in l'akapau Hall on March 2, Mrs Cranswick presiding over a fair attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. James; vice-presidents, Mrs. A. Cranswick and Mrs. Donald; secretary, Miss J. Donald; committee, Mrs. Stretch. Miss J. Bartram, Miss 11. Bartram. Mrs. Jolly, and Mrs. R. Craill: points secretary, Miss J. Bartram. Cm behalf of the members Mrs. O James presented Mrs. Stretch with a small gift for her help during the year. A vote of thanks was passed to the expresident and secretary for their work and leadership throughout the past three and a-half years. Competitions for 19.17-38 reulted; Mrs. Cranswick, 1; Mrs. Irvine, 2; Mrs. Warburton, 3. Best bloom: Miss J, Bartram. Competitions for the day resulted as follows:—Basket of flowers in most original basket: Mrs. Cranswick, 1; Miss J. Bartram, 2; Mrs. Bartram, 3. Best bloom: Miss M. Binnie, 1; Mrs. Stretch, 2; Miss.J. Bartram, 3. NGATAPA The annual meeting of the Ngatapa Institute was held on March 9, Mrs. Humphreys presiding over air, excellent attendance of members. The president gave an address on,the past year’s work, thanking members for the support they had given the officers. The report and balance sheet were adopted, Mrs. Humphreys speaking in appreciative terms of the manner in which the reports had been drawn up. The president was unanimously reelected for a further term of office, and Miss Muir and Miss Lyndall Williams were appointed treasurer and secretary respectively. The same committee agreed to cany on for another year. The competition, one egg cake, resulted:—Mrs. D. S. Williams, 1; Miss Muir, 2; Mrs. W. A. Dods, 3. Sweetpea seeds have been distributed to members for a competition to bjudged in October. The points’ prize for the last 12 months was won by Miss Muir. Hostesses for tire afternoon were Miss Mildred Dolman and Mrs. F. Briant. WHATATUTU The annual meeting of the Whatatutu Institute was held at Mrs. D Campbell’s home on March IC. The secretary read her report of the activities of the "institute during the year. The treasurer presented t.ho financial report, both being satisfactory. The prizes for most points in the competition were presented as follows: Cooking—Mrs. Murray, 1; Mrs. Pevreal, 2; Mrs. Shaw, 3. Sewing—Miss E. Pevreal, 1; Mrs. Shaw, 2; Mrs. Murray, 3. Miss A. Russell and Mrs. Pevreal were elected delegates for the council meeting in April. It was decided to hold a flower display, exhibition of work, and social afternoon at the hall in April. A most interesting link letter was read by Mrs. Murray. The president, the retiring secretary and the treasurer were presented with bouquets. Officers were elected ns follows: President, Miss Howard; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames McLeod and Pevreal; lion. secretary, Miss A. Russell; treasurer, Mrs. Shaw, who. with Mesdaipes Howard, Tait, Russell, Grey and Campbell comprised the committee. Other officials are Miss Pevreal, sales table; Mrs. Tait and Miss O. Russell, competitions; Mrs. McLeod, social hostess.

Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Howard and Campbell.

PUHA The annual meeting of the Puha Institute was held on March 23, Mrs. Bayley presiding over a good attendance. The report and balance sheet for the year were considered satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to the president, secretary and treasurer for their services during the year. The competition, a 21b. jar of flowers, resulted: Mrs. McGregor, 1; Mrs. Sefton, 2. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs. White and Mrs. Brown. TAMARAU 1 An enjoyable social evening was held by the Tamarau Institute at the Poho-o-Rawiri Hall last Tuesday. A pianoforte solo, “Ocean Spray,” was very capably played by Master Harold Andrew, who responded with an encore number, which was also very much enjoyed. Mr. Tom Martin gave a very clever tap dance, and Miss Tua Smith’s ballet of tap-dancers also showed first-class training. Two humorous songs sung by Mr. Reece were enjoyed. Supper was handed round and dancing continued to a late hour. Among the competition dance prizewinners were Mr. and Mrs. Russ, Jimmie Wicks and Barrie Tucker. TE KARAKA It was with real regret that members of the To ICaraka Women’s Institute accepted the resignation of Mrs. F. Charteris from the secretaryship, a post which she has so ably filled for the past two years. Appreciation of her services was expressed at the annual meeting, at which Mrs. H. Allen presided on March 16, and also votes of thanks were passed to the president and officers for their services. The secretary’s annual report, which was adopted, showed xi successful year’s working, and the treasurer’s statement presented a good credit balance. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs. J. V. Castles; vicepresidents, Mrs. R. Stephenson and Miss B. Orr; secretary, Mrs. H. Allen; treasurer, Miss V. Bull; sales secretary, Mrs. E. Ribbon; permanent hostess! Mrs. C. Bull; press correspondent, Mrs. F. Hobbs; librarian, Mrs. E. Olsen; Home and Country secretary, Mrs. Rowley. Last year’s committee was returned with the exception of Mrs. Bull and Mrs. Smithers. As a result of a notification from Dominion headquarters, it was resolved that the To Karaka Women’s Institute should join the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association. No programmes are to be issued this year, and each month a “mystery” programme will be arranged by two members, whose turn will be taken in alphabetical order. Mesdames H. Allen and C. G. Atkins have charge of the April programme, when the hostesses will be Mesdames F. Charteris and M. Clayton. The “Golden Thread” for the year will be “Famous Women of the World.” Mrs. H. Allen was nominated to stand for re-election for the Poverty Bay executive. The winner of the points’ competition for the year was Mrs. K. Olsen, and a competition held at the annual meeting was won bv Mrs. Alien. The hostesses for the day were the retiring committee.
