SUM OP £BOOO GONE STORY TOLD IN COURT LONDON, Dec. 18. In a written statement read to the Bench at Surrey Quarter ' Sessions. Thomas Ernest James Mellows, aged 37, accountant, who was sent .to prison for two years, declared that “night clubs and fast women” had been his downfall.

Mellows pleaded guilty to "obtaining credit by fraud and false pretences to the extent of £2l at Godstone. He also asked for three other offences to be taken into consideration.- v ; Detective-Sergeant Tappenden stated that Mellows was born in Shanghai. His parents, who were now dead, had been in a good position. Receiving a good education, he came to England to complete his examinations for accountancy, but was soon in trouble. He married an English woman in 1932, but his wife was now seeking a divorce.

Mellows told the bench that he spent £2OOO on an ex-chorus girl, who afterwards left him for another man. and he also spent £6OOO on other worthless women. He had now met the “one woman in the world,” -for whom he would make a fresh start.
