£93,685 IN TAXATION

CUSTOMS TOLLS COLLECTIONS IN GISBORNE £10,512 FOR DECEMBER The year 1938 ranks as the new boom year for the Gisborne branch of the Customs Department, the taxation collected by that office under the three main headings being £93,685 lis Id, as against £84,482 12s 7d for the previous year. All the main sections of State revenue handled by the office showed a decided increase over 1937, and a feature of the returns is that the sa'es tax payments for the 12 months exceeded the collections in excise duty upon beer. The December returns for the two years are given for comparison in the 'ollowing table:—

Totals .. 10,512 G 10 8,981 12 11 In the above table, the customs dues on imports shows a figure in excess of that for any single month since 1929. The comparison of the three main heads of taxation for the year furnishes the following table: — 1938 1937 £ £ Customs .. 53,179 18 8 49,243 6 G Beer excise 20,156 19 1 17,152 17 2 Sales tax . 20,349 13 4 18,068 8 11 Compared month by month for the past two years, collections at the Gisborne office show a steadily rising trend, the over-all comparisons being distinctly in favour of 1938, while in almost every instance the individual monthly totals of that year exceeded those of-the previous 12 months. The figures are as under: — CUSTOMS REVENUE
