MAORI DROWNED

LAKE ROTOITI FATALITY SEIZED BY OR AMP (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, this day. Hapeta Whata, aged 22, n Maori labourer, lost his life late yesterday afternoon as a result of being apparently seized by cramp when swimming at Otaramarae, Lake Rotoiti. A Maori girl, who was vowing a boat nearby stated that Mr. Whata appeared to be skylarking in the water and attempted to race tne boat. She turned to row back to the shore and heard him call out to her to come back, but thinking that he was still skylarking she took no notice. When she reached the shore another native told her that Mr. Whata was really in difficulties and she returned, but the n.an sank before she could reach him. The police later recovered the body in 20ft. of water.
