Visiting Wanganui Plane A low-wing monoplane, the Wanganui Aero Club's Miles Hawke, arrived at Gisborne at 2 p.m. yesterday via Hastings." The machine, which brought a passenger to Gisborne, was flown by Mr. R. Fletcher, a club pilot. This morning the plane departed at 7 o'clock on its return flight.
Weight-Estimating Competition In the sheep weight-estimating competition at the Nuhaka Show yesterday there were three competitors who were correct in their calculations. These were Messrs H. Pomana, and T. Monteith. Nuhaka. and Mr. N. H. Simpson, Wairoa. The weig ht of the sheep was 112£lbs. Waikanae Concertt Party
The concert party which provided popular entertainment at the New Year's Eve celebrations at the Waikanae Beach was headed by Mr. J. Lyle, and the items presented included songs by Miss E. Bugden, humorous numbers by Mr. J. Lyle, violin duo by Mr. W. G. Bingen and Mr. T. Lyle, with Mrs. Bingon at the piano, song and patter sketch by Mr. Seale, and comedy songs by Mr. L. O. East. No Accidents in Gisborne There were no accidents of a serious nature In Gisborne during the New Year holidays, a pleasing contrast to the numerous mishaps reported to the police during the previous week-end. Although there was an absence of accidents involving personal injury, however, there were the usual crop of minor collisions re ported to insurance companies. The accident nearest to Gisborne was one at Tokomaru Bay on Saturday night, when a motor-cyclist, Mr. D. N. Wil kins, received a broken leg and arm as a result of a motor collision.
Holiday-makers Returning Yesterday and to-day have been busy days for the motor service companies operating on the Gisborne voads north and south, "the homecoming of those on holiday being apparent in the passenger figures. The traffic was heavy from north and south yesterday and it was not known before midday whether or not the three cars at Opotiki would be sufficient to cope with the Gisborne people travelling home from Auckland. The special New Year car from Auckland to Gisborne is expected in to-night with a full load. It was reported that private traffic on the highways was Heavy, all manner of vehicles transporting people back U> the towns in readiness to start work to-morrow.
Holiday-makers at Te Karaka. Accommodation was fully taxed on the special train dispatched from Gisborne at 9.45 a.m. yesterday for the Te Karaka sports, and after stops had been made at various points along the route the train reached Te Karaka with 300 passengers. The number of excursionists by rail was the largest in the district for a New Year's Day fixture for a number of years. Other Gisborne residents travelled by road, while there also were holiday-makers from various parts of the district. The willow trees surrounding the sports ground provided shady spots for numerous picnic parties and at noon there were 150 cars parked on the field.
Crowds Attend Beaches Crowds of Gisborne residents and visitors to the district made good use of the beaches yesterday, the patron? using the bathing facilities at the Waikanae Beach reaching a record figure for the season. It was the first day of the season that was really enjoyable beach weather as far as> the Waikanae was concerned, even though the maximum temperaturp registered on the beach was only 80.5 deg. Whereas the direction of the wind was such that it favoured con ditions at the Waikanae Beach, tho bathers who travelled north to Watnui and to the Coast beaches further afield were not so fortunate with tho wind. The many picnickers on thf Coast, however, erected their tent« temporarily, large numbers choosinc the section between Wainui and Pouawa, and settled down to enjoy their day's outing despite a wind that was. lashing up white horses on the sea.
