New Year Celebrations

Although there were not many large or forma) parties on New Year's Eve, the festive season was celebrated very happily in many Gisborne homes on Saturday night, when jolly informal gatherings were held.

Invitations from hosts and hostesses to friends to visit their homes that night were numerous, and to accept, them all the holders were obliged to make many calls, with the result that during the evening cars laden with merry-makers went from one home to another during the night. The Scottish custom of "first footing," too. was popular and brought unexpected visitors to a great many homes, but the invaders were greeted with good cheer, and so the old year passed and the new year dawned. Croquet Tournament

A most enjoyable all-day croquet tournament was held by the Turanga Croquet Club yesterday afternoon on the municipal greens in Rutene road, members of the three local clubs participating. Morning and afternoon tea and luncheon were provided in the pavilion, and served under the direction of Mrs. E. A. Moncrieff.

The greens were in excellent order and the grounds, with beds of bright flowers, flowering shrubs in bloom, shady trees aid green lawns, looked very pretty in the brilliant sunlight, the d?.y being fine and warm and ideal for the occasion.

The scene on the dawns was attractive, the white sports frocks worn by the players looking smart and fresh against the green of the courts. Mrs. Luxton was in charge of the tournament, which was excellently run. In the A grade Mrs. Luxton won the first *prize, and Mesdames R. L. Gray and J,. K. Nasmith tied for the second. In the B division Mrs. E. A. Moncrieff was the winner and Mrs. E. H. Havers the runner-up. The trophies will be presented to the winners at the Turanga club's greens next Saturday afternoon by the president, Mrs. F. E. Ormiston.

The duties of timekeeper were ably carried out by Mrs. T. G. Lawless. Among those taking part were Mesdames W. M. Jenkins, Luxton, E. H. Havers, T. G. Lawless, T. Robertson, T. W. Bayliss, E. A. Moncrieff, Wilson, D. G. Robertson, Ansell, Foster, S. McKenzie, J. S. Wauchop, Corcoran, C. J. Rigg, J. K. Nasntith, J. Olliver, R. L. Gray, Murray, and A. Ingram.
