MILLER CUP ROWING

POVEETY BAY'S SUCCESS

WON LAST TWO RACES

Excitement was intense early last evening when the crews of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club were successful in retaining the Miller Cup in the series of races with the semi-finalists in the Gisborne Rowing Club's President's Fours event. Poverty Bays win in the first event made the points equal for the cup at three points each, and the final decided the issue in favour of Poverty Bay. The first event was won comparatively easily by the Poverty Bay crew two lengths of clear water separating W. McLeod, str., R. Webb, A Kearns, and A. Stone from P. A. Gavin, str., B. LeCompte, T. Bolton, and L. Ellmers at the finishing post. G. Ardern, str., P. Miller, T. Stevens, and J; Harrison (Poverty Bay) beat S. Allen, str., R. H. Coleman, J. Hutehin, and K. Conine (Gisborne) by a length. Allen got away at the start with a good burst and was leading bv a length after having covered the first half-mile. However, Ardern quickened up nicely and gradually wore down his opponent, going on to win the event and the cup for his club.
