CUP RACE HISTORY

CATALOGUE’S TRIUMPH

SECOND 8-YEAR-OLD WIN

FIRST lIV NUMBER FIVE

(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Nov. 2, 2.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 2.

The Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the Melbourne Cup race, says that Catalogue stunned the crowd at Flemington by winning the cup with ease. The sole credit for his preparation rests witli Mrs. McDonald. Catalogue is the oldest horse to win the cup for 73 years. The only other successful eight-year-old was Tory Boy in 1865.

Catalogue created history by carrying saddle cloth number five to victory for the first time in the cup. Catalogue gave his younger opponents a lesson in galloping. From the thr t ee furlongs onward, the race lacked excitement as it was apparent that Catalogue could not be beaten. Bourbon, who came from a long way back, may have had a chance had he been brought along sooner, but against that Catalogue was never really extended and his reaction to a challenge could not be estimated. Shean said that Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle all the way and was going so well that he never had any doubt that lie would win. Royal Chief, the favourite, never appeared to be going like a .winner. Bartle said that the slow race was against his mount. Catalogue’s 'time was five seconds outside the race record. Shean received as a present £IOOO from Catalogue’s connections. AVENGER NOT FOR STUD RACING IN AUTUMN ALLUNGA TO RETIRE (Reed. Nov. 2, 3 .p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. The original plans offering Avenger for sale for stud purposes have been changed. He has been withdrawn from sale and will b e prepared for racing in the autumn.

Allunga will probably be retired at the end of the spring campaign. T. Webster, the jockey, is returning from India and .will arrive in Melbourne this week. He has recovered from the effects of the fall suffered recently and hopes to resume riding here immediately.
