Eleven million industrial workers are affected by President Roosevelt’s wages and hours law, which came into force this week. Increased wages will be paid to 750,000 workers immediately, and 1,500.000 persons will Work shorter hours.
The Government’s eventual aim is a minimum wage of 10d an hour and a maximum 40-hour week. The present requirements under the new law are a minimum of 6Jd an hour and a 44-hour week, with time and a-half for overtime. In an appeal for co-operation of workers and employers the administrator of the Act, Mr. F. Andrews, bails the new step as memorable.” The constitutionality of the new law is expected to 'be tested in the courts.
