LEADERS IN DOUBT

GISBORNE BASKETBALL COMPETITION PLAY A GRADE POSSIBILITIES Although the competition is well advanced 'in the first round of the Poverty Bay- Basketball Asociation’s A grade championship series, there is still some uncertainty as to which team will prove tthe leaders at the end of the round. High School Old Girls' A team have, perhaps, the best prospects, being the only team in that grade which has not had a loss. However, they have yet to meet strong opponents in Huia, and if H.S.O.G. go under to Huia there will be three teams on terms, namely, H.S.O.G. A., Huia, and St. Mary’s Al. High School Old Girls’ B team have established themselves as the leaders of the B division, while St. Mary’s Cl are in a similar position in the C division. On Saturday several of the teams which had missed matches earlier in the season played extra games, but there are a number of contests yet to be decided in ’the first round. Scores are as follows: — A Grade High School A 22, Woolworths 7. Huia 20, IM'arathon 9. Tuis 21, High School A 18. St. Mary’s Al 'won Iby default from St. Mary’s A2. B Grade H.S.O.G. B 13, High School B 10. High School B won by default from St. Mary’s 82. C Grade Wesley 10, High School C 7. High School C 12, St. Mary's C2 10. Caledonians 24, St. Mary's C 3 1. St. Mary’s Cl 17, St. Mary’s C2, 4. St. Mary’s Cl 23. St. Mary’s C 3 2. COMMENT ON THE GAMES HOW TO IMPROVE THE PLAY

High School A v. Woolworths— The game was not as one-sided at the score would indicate. Woolworths gave a fair display, tout they could improve their game in many points. The centres in particular were inclined to pass wildly and they should watch their partners more closely. Woolworths continue to find it difficult to obtain good shooting positions and they could take more time to aim. The goalies should improve with practice. Playing well, High School’s defence kept their opponents busy, while the centres also displayed good comb.nation. T.ic forwards were shooting accurately, but they should avoid delays on passing the ball.

Hula v. Marathon.—The score was about even at half-time, but when play resumed Huia went ahead and set up a good margin. Miss H. McKnight was prominent in the defence third, making several good interceptions. The centres could have been quicker in passing on the ball, while the Huia forwards were not combining as well as usual. Fox Marathon, Miss N. Ansell was shooting well, while some good passing was witnessed in the centre third. Marathon’s defence players should be careful not to pass wildly into the centre third. Kept on the Run Tuis v. High School A. —Although Tuis won by a small margin,, they did not strike good form and at times their opponents kept them on the run. Tuis defence was strong, making it aifncul, for the opposing forwards to come close 'to the goal. Miss N. Bigneli played well in the centre third ana intercepted passes on a number of occasions. Tuis’ forwards were inclined to give away points through wild passes. . High School’s defence \yas sound and their centres played wen, passing briskly. A number of good goal shots were a feature of the fo.wards’ play.

H.S.O.G. B v. High School B. The teams were evenly matched and an even 'game resulted. On the whole, the play was slow and there was a lot of scrambling. Old Girls defence played hard and there were some clever interceptions. Play m the centre third was particularly even but he H S.O.G. players should try to catch the ball rather than ibat it. Several ot the HSOG. goals came from longrange Shots. The High School forwards used passes which were rathe too long, 'and they should jump moic to secure the ball.

Wesley v. High School C.— were inclined to bunch together and in the forward division 'they gave away many points through wild passes. The Wesley centres had 'an advantage m height and altogether they played a really good game. Their defence players were seen in some good wo\ at times, but they should guard their partners more closely. The opposing forwards were shooting accurately when they secured the ball. inc School centres should try to lump more for the ball and be careful to guard their partners. The defence played strongly, but needed to watch personal contact. Better in Second Half High School C v. St. Mary’s C2. High School seemed to have the be-.t of the game in the second half, crowding was a fault of players on both sides. In the centre third the High .School players tended to fumo. the forward division. Then ce - gave some wild passes and he defen players should jump more for the ball. Caledonians v.
