LADIES’ GOLF TITLE
WELLINGTON CONTEST SEMI-FINALISTS FOUND TWO AUSTRALIANS INCLUDED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The weather was overcast, with a cool, southerly breeze for the Wellington provincial women’s golf championship, which was continued at the Heretaunga links to-day. After play in the first and second rounds of the championship, two Australians, Mrs. Sloan Morpeth and Miss B. Cheney, and two New Zealanders, Miss V. Fleming and Mrs. McKillop, emerged for the semifinals and finals to-morrow morning and afternoon. The results of the second round are: Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) beat Miss S. Tolhurst (Australia), 3 and 2. Mrs. MeKillop (Christchurch) beat Miss E. Hutton (Australia), 2 and 1. Mrs. Sloan Morpeth (Australia) beat Miss B. Kernot (Australia), 1 up. Miss A. Cheney (Australia) beat Mrs. Guy Williams (Wellington), 5 and 4. One of the closest matches of the first round was between the Australians, Misses Wray and Kernot. Each was in difficulties to start with, but recovered well. Miss Kernot played some wonderful shots to secure her victory of one up. It was solid fighting all the way. Miss Tolhurst was in her best form to defeat Mrs. Slater, five and three, and the Christchurch duel between Mrs. McKillop and Miss Buchanan was a battle royal. Good putting brought Mrs. McKillop her victory at the nineteenth. Miss Cheney eliminated Mrs. Wel-ton-Hogg, two up, after a steady game, the former playing with more assurance. Miss Hutton piped a merry tune for Miss" Joan Williams, and played faultless golf to secure her win eight up and seven. Mrs. Guy Williams proved she is still in the front rank of New Zealand women players when she out-played Mrs. Latham to win three and two. Mrs. Sloan Morpeth had to give of her best to beat Mrs. A. Martin, three and two. She wore her opponent down by sheer steadiness. In the second round Miss Fleming conquered the hard task of beating Miss Shirley Tolhurst. There . were patches of faulty play in the match, especially in the outward journey, but Miss Fleming made up for her mistakes and bad judgment by great putting. Mrs. McKillop outplayed Miss Hutton, and showed fine confidence in all her strokes. Mrs. Morpeth and Miss Kernot fought a hard duel. There was little between them the whole way. Neither was very much at home on the greens. Miss Cheney improved her golf when she met Mrs. Guy Williams, and went ahead steadily with longer and more powerful drives.
