NATIVE BLOCK RATES

GOVERNMENT GRANT WAIROA REQUEST (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A promise to make a grant equivalent to the amount oi annual rates on the Nga Mahunga block lands has been made by the Native Department to the Wairoa County Council. This was revealed at yesterday’s meeting of the council, when the acting chairman, Cr. A. T. Carroll, stated that while in Wellington recently he took the opportunity of discussing with the Native Department the question of payment of rates on the Nga Mahanga block lands. The department recently caused the Nga Mahanga lands to be deleted from the list of rateable properties on the roll on account of the holding being Crown land.

“I pointed out,” Mr. Carroll said, “that the lands were being farmed, and should contribute towards the cost of maintenance of the roads used for working the property. The department has now agreed tb make a grant to the council in lieu of rates, of an amount equal to the annual rates, as in the case of the Kakariki Crown settlement."
