WAIROA ROADS
COUNTY REPORT NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL (Herald Correspondent.) Mr. R. W. Hawthorne, the engineer, in addition to a comprehensive report on the main highways, reported generally as follows to yesterday’s meeting of the Wairoa County Council: — "Application has been made and an amount of £l5O granted for work to be done under the Department of Agriculture’s scheme for the eradication and control of noxious weed's. The grant of £l5O covers the cost of the material, labour and transport. Labour is to be drawn from lists submitted by the district employment officer, but at present it is doubtful if sufficient labour can be obtained to carry out the scheme. "The work of widening and Improving the Willow Flat, road by means of labour drawn through the labour bureau has been commenced. The work is being done on a cooperative contract basis, but it is a very difficult matter to get sufficient labour to (ill the camp. At present one gang of four men is engaged on the work. "The bridge gang lias been engaged in'.."replacing---a small, bridge •on the Kokahu r.oad. giving access, to Mr. D. V. Thomas’' property 1 . General repairs to bridges throughout the county and on highways also have been carried out. “Most, of the unmetal led countyroads are in very fair condition and I have made a start in grading up the rougher portions in preparation for the seasonal carting.”
