DIVORCE LAW REFORM

LORDS GIVE CONSENT MEDICAL MAN APPROVES BISHOP VOICES SUPPORT (Elcc. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) (Rccd. June 29, 2.50 p.m.) LONDON, June 28. The Marriage Bill providing for reforms in the divorce law to-day passed the second reading in the House of Lords without a division. The most striking speech was that of Lord Dawson who said that it must not be thought an increase in divorce meant a corresponding increase in marriage failures. Women in the past had not more freedom in sex than under the law, but in the years succeeding the Great War women had a freedom of companionship hitherto unknown, and with freedom of equality came an increase in sex consciousness. He regretted the omission of inveterate alcoholism and drug taking ns grounds for divorce. “It is only members of our profession who have a knowledge of the desperate state of fear in a home in which one of the partners is a victim,” he said. The Bishop of Birmingham, Dr. E. W. Barnes, supported the bill, because it seemed to be in accordance with the spirit of Christ.
