WAIROA RAINFALL
BELOW THE AVERAGE APRIL RETURNS (Herald Correspondent.) The rainfall for Wairoa for April, as recorded bv Mr. C. 0. Mackay at U i'utaputa. ('minepaka Valley, was 2.61 m., made up as follows: April 3, .72m.; Vpril 4, .67in. : April 5, .10m. ; April 6. .21iu. ; April 17, .60in. ; April 19, 21 in. ; April 24, .lOiu. The total for the present year is 9.53 in.. made up as billows:—January, 1.84 in. ; February. 2.58 in.; March. 2.50 in. : and April. 2.61 m., which is a good deal below the average 'or manv years and accounts for the ground being very hard, and where there is a clav pan making post-hole digging a problem. The returns for the past five years ■ire:—l932, 40.08 in. : 1933. 72.22iu.: 1931. 50.81 in. : 1935. 77.22 in.. 1936. 48.34 in.
There is still plenty of time for the 'Vairoa average of 56in. to be made up, but in Hie meantime the country is too hard to favour extensive ploughing and where it has been carried out the con ditions for sowing are not of the best.
