HARDSHIP IN ITALY
BURDEN OF TAXATION REPRESSION IN GERMANY IMPRESSIONS OF VISITOR (Per Pross Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The intense hardship suffered by the people was the outstanding impression formed bv Dr. J. 0. Duncan, New Zealand Government balneologist, during his recent visit to Italy.
On his return by the Niagara, Dr. Duncan said that the sufferings of the people were indeed great. They were taxed to the utmost limit, but strangely enough, taken on the whole, were fairly cheerful. The Mussolini regime' was resented from the highest to the lowest in respect to employment problems. "The working man is asked to work four months in the year. _ During the remaining months he is idle," Dr. Duncan said.
In Germany he found an atmosphere of repression on every side. The younger people were definitely hypnotised by Hitlerism, but the older people were definitely unhappy under the present regime. Everywhere a military attitude was displayed and no freedom of speech was allowed.
