WHAKATANE . COUNTY £13,000 OUTSTANDING The heavy burden of unpaid native rates Was referred to at a meeting of the Whakatane County Council when the finances for the year were reviewed. The statement of receipts showed that native rate payments during the year amounted to only £777, and rates outstanding to March 31 totalled £13,842. The European rate outstanding was only £3196. It was decided to urge the Governtnent to expedite the collection of these outstanding rates. Reviewing the finances as a whole, the treasurer reported that the total payments for 1936-37 were £69,791, and tho receipts £65,078. Tlie finance cpmmittee reported that only provisional estimates could be submitted until details of the county .revaluation were available. Miscellaneous expenditure for the coming year would exclude State highways, and was estimated to amount to £30,212.
