LONDON, April 21. Instead of the formality of opening the apple season at Australia House, the Australian High Commissioner, Mr. S. M. Bruce, Invaded the trade stronghold, Hpitalficlds market, and personally auctioned 12 boxes of Australian plums, penis, and appies. The proceeds were equally divided between the Employees’ Benevolent Fund and the Slum Children’s Country Holiday Fund. Facing a crowd of hard-bitten buyers in the amphitheatre, Mr. Bruce announced that the Brokers' Associa- . tion was opening the bidding at £IOO. ■ He pleaded with the buyers to examine their consciences, to Ciinlt how.they had “done” the poor Australian producor, and to remember all the money they had made out of him. ... Bidding flagged at £125, whereupon v - Mr. Bruce exclaimed: “Really, if you it -don’t do something Australia will leave you in the next war.” The amphitheatre roared appreciation of the joke and Ihe lot was knocked down for £l3O.
