BLOCK OF 27 FLATS
AUCKLAND EXPERIMENT
HOUSING OF PENSIONERS
(BpMlftl to the Herald.) - ■ ' ; AUCKLAND, this day. In an effort to make some provision for the decent housing of old-age pen- . sioners and other old people in poor circumstances, the Auckland Git) * Counoil proposes shortly to embark on the erection of a block of small flats in Ponsonby. The building, which will be of brick, will contain 27 flats. It is estimated that the scheme will cost, aproximately £IO,OOO. , It is not yet possible to say what rentals will have to be charged, but apart from the value of the land, which is at present showing a low return to the council, it is thought that, on the basis of double flats, a rent ot 13s a week for each at might be possible. The proposal is being regarded as an experiment and may load to the erection of further blocks in other pasts of the city.
