"SCHOOL FUNCTIONS

Great interest was taken in Mnriwai in the bazaai- and fancy dress ball for the school, both of which functions were held on Thursday in the Muriwai Hall.

Jfe J. Devery, chairman- of the Muriwai School Committee, in opening the bazaar in the afternoon, thanked the people for "their presence and for the immense amount ot Work they had put in. He also referred to-several business firms which, bv their contributions had assisted. • With "the weather all that, could be wished for there was a large gathering of parents and;friends. "The following stalls were*in operation:—Jumble, in charge of Mrs.' Cox, assisted by Misses Price, ■ Wva-tt, and Taylor; sewing, Mrs. Dailey and Miss Doolev; produce. Mrs. Toroa, Misses Malm Fohntu,. K. Wilsin, R. Wilson, and Mr. Te Hau; sweets t Misses Vioret Dailey and Muriel McEwen ; meat, Messis. Dice Wilson and Joe Brown. Mrs.tKemp, Miss Karepa, Mr. W. Poron and a band of willing workers handled the afternoon tea arrangements. A .beautiful cake made by Mrs. J. McEweiJ and decorated by Mrs. 11. Lunn. and a doll dressed by"' MTsa_"(l' Wyatt were "competed for. "The cake was in charge of Miss Irene Dailey and the doll in Miss Gwen Devery's care. In addition, *there was a, nail driving competition sponsored by Mr. Tu for tjie men,-two of whom, Messrs. T. K. Morgan and K. Te Hau, embarrassed' their rivals?by driving their nails into the log with!lorie hit each, to share the prize. Aft imobtrusive but efficient, worker was the doorkeeper, Miss Sophie Wyllie. The weight of a dressed sheep -proved very elusive, the estimates varying from 45 to Sllb-4and this in a sheep country. Altogether the function was a great success and flie school will benefit considerably as a result. ; FANCY DRESS BALL

The fancy dress ball in the evening was jeqitally successful, there being a large of pupils, their parents,, and wie dancing .public. The children, occupied th& floor - iifit II 10 p.m., when a. thoroughly ! enjoyable supper was served to the children arid later to the adult*. The ladies' committee in chargo of tfi£ supper arrangements' comprised Mesdames Kemp, Cox, Dailey, Toroa and Porotri. .-.-,■, ,t- -.,.... -

During-the special march the fancy costumes were judged bv Miss Hunt, PakowJHff ~~~\W6 "McW 'the following .awards: Charlotte Karepa (Maori maiden), best Maori costume; Ellen Porou|(leaf girl), home-made costume; and. Betty Craig (sunflower), most original. Mr. J. Devery, chairman of tho committee, in an interval offered the the school to Miss Hunt for her rffdging of the costumes, to the parent* fii£ their support and assistance iu matfirjg* the ball a success, and to the teacheisKif 'the school,

Flyer, Gisborne, won thjß decorated cake, being only loz. short of the correct weight, 111 b. 50z.: dressed doll, Miss R. Raihania and I? ex Devery tied, and the latter won the toss, but presented.. the doll to. Miss Raihania. Music for dancing was supplied by the»Krazy Kat orchestra, and Mr. T,' K, Morgan, a member of the committee, made an efficient M.C.
