There were 13 escapes, from New Zealand gaols last year, states the Prisons Department in its animal report. With one exception all the escapees were recaptured. The number is not higher than the average. Local bodies which undertake the installation of gas or electric cookers free of installation costs are acting illegally, according to a ruling given to t(> Lytlelton Borough Council by the Audit Department. Another earthquake scar will be erased from the business area of .Napier shortly with the restoration of the building known as the "Shades," in Hastings street, which was purchased recently by Messrs. Barry Bros., Limited.
