HIGH SCHOOL TOURNEY NOT A DULL BOUT SMII.TR retains belt There was not n dull 1 >ont at Hip boxing tournament, held last, evening by the students of the Gisborne High School in the school assembly hall. The capacity of the hall was taxed to its limit and the contestants went “all out.' The championship bout was the feature of the. evening, and W. Smilcr retained the school championship and the Doddrell Belt. Mr. 0. Burns was the announcer, and he was assisted in ihe running of the tournament by other members of the teaching staff. At, an interval in the programme the rector, Mr. ,1. Jhitton, welcomed the visitors and thanked the Gisborne Boxing Association’s officials for their assistance. ITe referred particularly to the services of Mr. .lack Heaney, to whom, lie said, the school owed a. debt of gratitude. For a long time lie and his friend. Mr. W. Robertson. bad given their services, and Mr. Hutton was sure that the school benefited by the activity during the winter evenings. Mr. F. Dominey also was thanked for officiating in the ring during the tournament.

Oil behalf of the Gisborne Boxing Association, All-. W. Lissant Clayton replied that ibis association was doing its best to assist the amateurs. A club had been formed and would he opened next week to foster a, good spirit, among the hoys. Ho announced that at the amateur Tournament to he held next Tuesday evening all students of secondary schools would he admitted at half price in order to encourage the keener followers of boxers among them. BRIGHT PROGRAMME In the first, bout of the evening J. McLernon was matched against, A. Johnson, and although McLernon showed a nige left, Johnson used both hands effectively. McLernon opened up in the last round and earned Ihe decision of the referee. The semi-final of the over 10st. section was fought, between R. Kells and IL Sim. In a fast first round Kells had the reach in his favour, but Sim connected with some good blows to the body. They went hammer and tongs in the second and last rounds, and the decisidn in favour of Sim was a popular one. H. Lee met R. Simpson in the next bout and after dealing out punishment in a. handy fashion was declared the winner in the first round througn a technical knock-out. In ihe first round of the limit between D. Clirisp and B. Johnson, the two contestants seemed reluctant to come to blows. The second round passed similarly, hnt. both opened up in ihe final spell and Clirisp took the decision after getting home somo good lofts.

The next bout was between D. Tnrein, and J. Holder and flic Maori boy proved clever on his feet, a fact that got him out. of much trouble. After taking punishment in fhe second round, Holder came out- full of fight in flic last round and snatched file decision by a- narrow margin.

Action was the keynote in the bout, between R. Mortimer and T. Elley, and at, the conclusion of the first round Elley’si seconds threw in the towel. A. Miillan met IL Nossiter in the under 6j-sf. class, and both mixed blown freely. Mnllan forced the pace in the final round, but Nossiter was a cleaner bitter and gained the ■ decision. Tn the under 7J,-st. class a good bout was provided by J. Kay and D. Bull, who both opened well in the first round. The second was even, but Bull did all the lending in the final round to take the honours.

The next- bout was between D. Singe and L. Little, and a. feature was Ihe ruggedness of both fighters. Singe took punishment from wild swings, but some of bis also connected. The final round started at, a, fast clip, and after using more force Little took the decision. N. Pettit and T. Bennett met. and after an even two rounds Bennett kept, worrying Pettit to earn the decision of (lie. referee. GOOD CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT

The last bout before' the interval was between IL Zame and \V. Iladwcn. Zamo took the first round, but Iladwen brightened considerably in tlio second. Zamc hung on tenaciously, but Iladwen had him groggy- and proved a convincing winner.

The first bout after the interval was between O. Walton and K. Hamilton, and the former made the going hard. Hamilton improved as the bout progressed, and took the decision by- a slightmargin.

A. Fleming met P. Nelson, and clinches were frequent. Nelson rushed Fleming round the ring in the second round, but Fleming scored in the. last round to win the. decision. The next bout, was between D. Robinson and Jackson, and the latter rained blows on his opponent’s head in the, first round. Jackson was again aggressive in the final round, and although dazed, Robinson stood up to him well. Jackson was announced the winner.

I). Fraser and R-.. Scott were matched, but there was no action until the start

of the second round. Scott showed a good left, and a quick right that won him the bout.

When G. Tangney met 11. Itnss, (lie Jailer’s long reach kept his man at .bay. Itoss punished Tangney in the final round, and the decision in his favour was a. popular one. Both IT. Collett and IJ. Morice mixed it freely and the repeated rushes of Morice had Collett worried in the, second round. Collett recovered in the final round and the referee awarded a draw. The final oT the over lOst. class was fought between It. Sim and It. Smith. Sim opened nicely and Smith, who was at a disadvantage as regards reach, was hard put to it. to even up the points. Smith forced the issue in Ihe second round and his opponent, seemed to show signs of tiring after already having fought a. bout. Smith again made the pace in the final round, and toe to toe they exchanged blows. Sim recovered and won the decisioip The bout for the school championship and Doddrell Hell, was fought between W. Smiler, the holder, and 11. Fraser over three two,minute rounds. Smiler tloorcd Fraser with a nice left in the first, miiiulc and lie stayed down for the count of seven. Fraser was: on tire defence for the rest, of the round. Fraser connected with some Hashing lefts in the second round and had the Maori hoy shedding blood. The second round went to Fraser, several of Smiler’s liny-making swings going wide. Smiler landed a powerful right, at the start of the final round, and although Fraser fought, back gamely, Smiler was hitting with more confidence. Fraser tool; tin' count of eight, and with the conclusion of tire round Smiler took a popular decision.
