FREEZING WORKERS
NEW AWARD APPLICATION SURPRISE WITHDRAWAL (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The applications by North and South Island freezing workers for a Dominion award were unexpectedly withdrawn in the Arbitration Court this morning. Witnesses and assessors attended from all parts of New Zealand, including Bluff. Tho workers had sought a 40-hour five-day week and an increase of about 15 per cent over the 1931 rates. The employers’ counter-claims asked tor the retention of the present hours, with Saturday work, and opposed any increases above tlio 1951 scale. The workers’ representatives made a subsequent statement to the press, as follows: “As a result of a representative meeting in Auckland regarding the North and South Islands freezing workers’ dispute, it was decided to withdraw the claims. Further, it was decided to create a. new dispute covering both islands and claims have been prepared for filing.” Tho employers made a statement as follows: “Trio existing agreement continues until it is superseded by a fresh award or industrial agreement, hut with the application of the 1931 rates as from July 1.”
