CARS IN GERMANY

A DEEINLTE LUXURY SYDNEY, Aug. 11. Mr. H. C. French, managing director of the Ford -Motor Company of Austra--1 lia I’ty.. Limited, who returned yesterI day. after a trip to Europe, said that the "consumption’' of cars in Germany was less than in Australia, tMrs in Germany were a definite luxury. "We are making a Ford in Germany, which is ICO per cent constructed, in the country,’’ said Mr. French. ‘Met it is costing the buyer the ’equivalent of £6OO in Australian nioney for a normal sedan. The Opel -ear is about the cheapest car obtainable itv Germany.' Mr. French said that he had heard nothing of Ihe rumoured £6O ear which Hitler had proposed to manufacture for the people. Conditions there seemed to he very upset. As all exports of money had been stopped, it was impossible tor a Gorman tn pay for anything outside Germany. For this reason the Fords were made within the country. In England, continued Mr. French, motor plants ‘were working to capacity, and the l.usiness waS very prosperous. In America there seemed to. he a great deal of political unrest, which was making business uncertain. but in England there was no sign of unrest. Taken all round, the motor trade was better than ever before.
