MAORI POTATO SHORTAGE
DISTRIBUTION ON COAST HOSPITAL BOARD ACTION In order to overcome the failure of the Maori potato crop last season, supplies of South Island potatoes arc being distributed to necessitous cases on tlie Coast, writes the Herald’s Tokomaru Bay correspondent.
The past season was so wet and generally unfavourable for the growth and harvest of the potato and kuinara in most parts of the coast districts that it soon became apparent that an acute shortage of supplies ivould be faced. Accordingly, steps were taken by the Native Department to .order bulk lots from the South Island, and these have been coming to hand lately-
The distribution of potatoes is being undertaken by the Waiapu Hospital Board, and a report on the matter was made at a meeting of the board held in Te Araroa onJMonday.
The chairman. Mr. A. J. H. Kirkham stated that he had interviewed the registrar of the Native Land Court in Gisborne, who said he would be pleased to have the co-operation of the Hospital Board in the distribution of potatoes in needy cases. The secretary', Mr. J. Todd, said that he had received names of various people in need of support, and had forwarded them to Gisborne for investigation. ___________
