NUGGET OF PLATINUM
SOUTHLAND FIND STONE SIZE OF WALNUT WORTH NEARLY COO (Per Prcs3 Association.! INVERCARGILL, last night. A stono of dull greyisii line, discovored at Oroti Beach bv Mr. E. Risle.v, of Invercargill, lias boon pronounced pure platinum. About .12 months ago, Mr. Risle.v found a similar stono, but after a casual examination he threw it away. Recently, when at the beach, he found another similar stone and decided to send a small piece to the Government analyst, who reported that it was the unrest platinum he had seen. It was about the size of a walnut, weighed 1 •! ounces and was valued at nearly £SO.
Platinum is usually secured in tiny flakes, and the authorities express astonishment at the discovery 01. a nugget weighing l:j ounces. It was suggested that the nugget of platinum originally came from Stewart. Island via the sea bed, but Mr Rislcy discounts this theorv. «.
There are several places in Southland where platinum deposits have been found, but never in quantities to warrant development. Mr. Rislev has a theory that.his find was brought down to the sea bv the Aoarima River.
