"HIT AND RUN" DRIVER
FINES TOTAL £ls
LICENSE SUSPENDED
WAINUI ROAD ACCIDENT
The "hit-and-run" driver concerned in the Wainui road accident on May 2 appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Police Court, to-day, and was fined a total of £ls on three charges, and had his license suspended for 12 months.
He was a Maori, Osborne Hura, who pleaded guilty. Accused was charged with negligent driving, failing to report an accident in which an injury was sustained, and failing to stop after the accident. The victim of the accident was Ida Coppage Stenner.
Detective G. A. McWhirtor stated that the car collided -with Miss Stenner, who was wheeling a bicycle along Wainui road. The speed of the ear was described by witnesses as "terrific." The accused, according to another witness, was in a state of intoxication in town during the day, and was in ,such a bad .condition that the witness, who'was a friend of the accused, refused to allow the accused to use his car until later in the day. The accused was spoken well of by his emplover, and was apparently a. good worker, whose main trouble was drink. Mr. S. V. Beaufoy, who appeared for the accused, said that this district had been free from the serious type of such cases. Hura's recollection was vague regarding the incident. He remembered hitting something, but did not know what it was. Counsel had no excuse to offer on behalf of his client, but pointed out that the accused was so upset over it that he made a special trip to town to see the detective. Counsel suggested that the accused would be severely punished by the publicity, a fine, .and the cancellation of .his license.
His Worship: You have made an eloquent plea for him, but the Legislature is taking a serious view of what is commonly known as the hit-and-run cases.
The accused was fined £5 on each of the three charges, and his license cancelled for 12 months.
Mr. Beaufoy asked if the cancellation of the license might operate from to-morrow, because the accused had his car in town, and wished to take it. back home.
His Worship: The man should not have a license. It is not for me to say whether he will be caught to-day or not.
