STRIKES IN FRANCE
START IN MOTOR WORKS SETTLEMENT IN PART DISCONTENT SPREA D INC FEARS IN OTHER TRADES (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 30, 11.30 a.m.) ‘LONDON, May 2!). A strike in French .motor factories, which seems to be political rather than industrial, is causing anxiety.
The Renault factory at Billaneourt has 30,000 employees idle. These have been joined by workers in other establishments, including the Citroen, Fiat and Ileorne motor works, the Forman aviation works, and also the iron and silk industries. The Gravity of the trouble necessitated a discussion by the Prime Minister, M. Sarraut, who assumed charge of the situation, with the Minister of Labour, M. Frossard, the Minister of Air, M. Beat, and the Minister of War, General Maurin. N EGOTIA TION EFFOR TK M. Frossard promised to do his utmost to induce employers to negotiate with the strikers.
The unrest is spreading to the provinces, including agricultural workers. The strikers’ demands range from higher wages to the abolition of overtime, the institution of paid holidays and the distribution of milk to employees performing unhealthy work.
Some employees resumed when the demands were conceded.
An agreement in principle was reached at the Ministry of Labour in connection with the metal industries strike.
To-day’s latest developments indicate that- the main strike which involved 22 plants and 80,000 workers is expected to end shortly. The directors and workers of the Renault establishment reached an agreement whereby 30,000 men will resume work on June 1.
A secret meeting of the strike leaders decided to resume work in the metal factories, but the discontent is spreading to the building industry where a stoppage is threatened.
YUGOSLAV RIOTING DEMONSTRATOR KILLED (Reed. May 30, noon) BELGRADE, May 29. Ten thousand building workers are sti-iking for higher wages and shorter hours. The police fired on a mob of demonstrators and one was killed and sLx were wounded.
