OPOTIKI COUNTY

ABNORMAL COSTS MET HIGHER MAINTENANCE The past year’s activities of the Opotiki County Council were outlined by the chairman, Mr. J. 11. Reid, at the recent annual meeting. He stated that careful administration had been maintained but notwithstanding this the. council had been called upon to meet increased maintenance and other expenditure on main highways and comity roads. That had been occasioned largely by the steadily increasing motor requirements and owing to the abnormal rains causing road blockages. The gross expenditure for the year on all works totalled £20,559, as against £16,141 for tlie previous year. Although the expenditure for roading had so materially increased the council had managed to meet the liability without increasing rates and without incurring additional hank overdraft. The hank overdraft, of £5752 at March 31 last was less by approximately £SOO in comparison with that, of the previous year.
