CHECK TO CLIMBERS

SNOW ON EVEREST STILL HOPE OF SUCCESS PREPARATIONS BY PARTY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Mav 30. 3 p.m.) London. May 29. Mr. Hugh Unit ledge, tlu* leader of (he Everest expedition, in a message I rout his camp, says that owing to reports that the monsoon is travelling north irom India and also a heavy mountain snowfall. Camp No. 3 was again evacuated. Snow precludes an at tael; on the summit for some time.

The first assault party was in position on the North t.ol on May 15. a week earlier than was planned, and had the snow cleared Mt. Everest might have been climbed under ideal conditions, but owing to the absence of the normal north-west winds, the monsoon reached the Himalayas, in great strength 1C days before it was expected, rendering the slopes of the North Col unsafe. To this cause were due the fatal avalanche of 1922 and the avalanche of 1935 during Mr. K. E. Shiplon s reconnaissance.

“The only hope is a temporary break in the monsoon and the removal ot snow bv the north-west winds.' continues the report. “The North t.ol will, if necessary. he climbed at night when the Irost binds the slope. We shall not abandon lhe struggle until all the possibilities arc explored.”
