FIRST OF THE GREAT LINERS.—(Right), the Great Eastern, launched in 1858, was a sensational ship in her day, being far larger than her predecessors. She was 680 ft long, with a gross tonnage of 13,915. The Queen Mary is 1018 ft in length and has an approximate gross tonnage of 80,700. On the bottom right, Captain Sir Edgar Britten, master of the wonder ship.
