RUSSIAN FAMILY
REUNITED AFTER YEARS RELEASE OF DAUGHTER MELBOURNE, May 18. Miss Fanny Milstein, IC, who was born and educated in Soviet Russia, arrived at Melbourne to-day by the German steamer Main to join her parents and to complete her education. The family reunion is a culmination of years of endeavour to obtain thg permission of the Soviet first for Mrs. Milstein anu then for her daughter to leave Russia and join Mr. Milstein in Australia.
Mr. M. Milstein is a mining engineer, and is a graduate of the University of Petrograd, where Mrs. Milstein also graduated as a doctor of medicine. Air. Milstein left Russia in 1920, .but Mrs. Milstein was not allowed to join him until 1931, when the British Government obtained permission for her to go. Fanny was still forced to remain in Russia as a .Soviet citizen. After living for a time in Mexico, Air. and Mrs. Afilstein came to Australia two years ago, and now, through the intervention of the Federal Government, permission has been obtained for their daughter to join them and to complete her education in Alelbourne.
Having spent all her life in a Soviet State, Aliss Afilstein is very interested in the new country in which she will live and in its capitalist society. She is a strong supporter of the Russian experiment, and says that Russia’s pro gross is shown by the improving standard of living of the people. AUss Alii,stein’s education has not been confined to Communism and politics, for at the school which she attended in Leningrad she was taught mathematics, science, geography, history, and languages. She speaks German fluently in addition to her native Russian, and she also has a slight knowledge of other languages, including English.
