BANDS TOP THE BILL
VAUDEVILLE IX BRITAIN LONDON. Feb. 18. Dance band leaders have now established themselves as the biggest and highest paid personalities on the variety stage. A few years ago the appearance ol a band in variety was a novelty. This week more than'2o famous bands arc topping the bill at leading music-halls throughout the country. Most of them are paid from £SOO to £7OO a week. Harry Hoy--most energetic; Ambrose—most sedate: and Jack Myltoil— who started the tlung- still mean mosl to Ihe box oflice. Apart from the leader, Ihe orchesIrator is Ihe highest paid member of the band, lie gets from £25 to £3O a week. The specialists- those instrumentalists who also sirm or dance receive about £25. The others average £ls to £2O a week. , Geraldo is one ol the busiest musical directors in Ihe country, lie owns four bauds and employs 200 musicians. Some of the band leaders are now employing variety acts, and so providing the complete programme.
