COSMIC RAY RESEARCH
APPARATUS ON AORANGI ONE OF SEVEN SETS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, tins day. Apparatus to determine ihe intensity of. "cosmic rays in (lit" t'aeiric has been, installed in a. special cabin on tne ail deck of the Aorahgi, which arrived from Vancouver to-day. i'he apparatus is oiie ~1 seven wets established at strategic points throughout the world. The meter on the Aorangi was installed on January by Professor Arthur Compton, who visited New Zealand hi 1932 for cosmic ray experiments, and the set remains on tiie vessel for about a year in charge of the chief officer, Mr. i{. N. Turner, who has made a study ol cosmic ray properties. Mr. Turner said that Professor Compton, who had travelled from Honolulu to Vancouver on the Aorangti's last northward trip, was satisfied with the work of the instrument. It was 100 early to determine the results. From the experiments it was noticeable, however, that changes of latitude had their effects owing to the magnetic field of the earth deflecting the cosmic rays.
