DANZIG CONTROVERSY
REPORT TO THE LEAGUE CONSTITUTION VIOLATED SERIOUS VIEW ADOPTED (British Ofiiciid Wireless.) Reed. 2 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 22. The League Council at Cenevn today had before it the- situation in Danzig, which the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Anthony Eden, has reported to the Council on a question described as ''exceptionally grave." Other members of the Council spoke strongly on the violations of the Danzig constitution which have occurred, and which must, they declared, he brought to an end. .Mr Eden will prepare proposals for submission to the Council at a subsequent meeting with a view to securing respect for the constitution, which is guaranteed by the League.
Air Eden sternly criticised lite Nazi Government of Danzig, declaring that if he seemed to stress the gravity of the situation it was because events since September raised the question of whether the Danzig Government was acting in goodwill and good faith. The League commissioner for Danzig, Mr Dean Lester, described the situation in Danzig as acute, as a result of the non-fulfilment of previous promises.
Heir Greiser, President of the Danzig Senate, declared thai it was 'not intended to repudiate the constitution. '' We have 1 ried out 7"> per cent, of tic League's recommendations," he said. "Differences of interpretation ex isted in respect of others which are of minor importance. We, the League's child, look to the League to uphold peace and justice." Summing up, Mv Eden slated that he could not accept Ilorr Preiser's view that the failure to fulfil cerlain undertakings was not. important, or admitted of differences of interpretation. On the contrary, it was impossible In allow matters to continue. ■'We must try* to reach a solution, he said.
